Cash or card?
Cards and tap-to-pay work almost everywhere in the big cities, but temples, shrines, small eateries and market stalls often take cash only. Plan on ¥10,000–20,000 in your wallet.
Withdrawing
7-Eleven and Japan Post ATMs accept most international debit and credit cards, with English menus. Withdraw bigger amounts less often to save on fees, and always choose to be charged in yen.
Tax-free shopping changed on November 1, 2026
Japan moved to a refund system. You now pay the full price, including the 10% consumption tax (8% on food), at the store.
Spend at least ¥5,000 (before tax) in one store on the same day and show your passport so the purchase is registered as tax-free.
Keep the items unused and unopened, and keep your receipts.
At the airport, bring the goods and receipts to the customs tax-refund counter before you check in your bags. Ask the store how they pay the refund back.
Purchases made up to October 31, 2026 were exempted in the store under the old system.
